Medical clearance before participating

You are responsible for determining whether you are physically and medically able to participate safely in the courses and exercises.

You should consult a doctor or other qualified healthcare professional before beginning a course if you:

  • Have an existing or suspected medical condition, injury, disability or chronic pain.
  • Are pregnant, have recently given birth or have recently undergone surgery or medical treatment.
  • Experience cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, spinal, joint, bone, tendon or ligament problems.
  • Experience dizziness, fainting, balance difficulties, unexplained weakness or shortness of breath.
  • Have been advised to restrict physical activity.
  • Have any doubt about whether an exercise or course is suitable for you.

If your healthcare professional gives you instructions, limitations or contraindications, you must follow them. Do not perform an exercise that conflicts with professional medical advice applicable to you.

Safe participation

Exercise and physical movement involve inherent risks. These risks may include discomfort, aggravation of an existing condition, falls, strains or other injuries.

Always follow the instructions and contraindications provided with the relevant course. Perform each movement slowly, within a comfortable range and without forcing your body.

You should only exercise in a safe and appropriate environment, with sufficient space and suitable support or equipment where required.

Do not attempt an exercise if you do not understand the instructions or if you cannot perform it safely. Where an adaptation is offered, choose the version appropriate to your current ability.

When to stop exercising

Pay attention to your body during and after each exercise. Stop immediately if you experience pain, dizziness, faintness, chest discomfort, unusual shortness of breath, loss of balance, numbness, sudden weakness or any other unexpected or concerning symptom.

Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before continuing if symptoms persist, recur or cause concern.

Medical emergency

If you believe that you may be experiencing a medical emergency, stop exercising and contact the appropriate emergency medical service immediately.

Individual results

Responses to exercise and movement programmes vary between individuals. No particular physical, therapeutic, emotional or wellbeing result is promised or guaranteed.

  • Exercising within your own abilities and comfortable range of movement.
  • Stopping when an exercise causes pain or unexpected symptoms.
  • Using a safe environment and suitable equipment or support.
